akibat yang ditimbulkan adalah: web tidak bisa diakses, wp-admin juga ndak bisa. setelah googling, ini adalah cara menyelesaikannnya

How to clear the “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance” message after doing automatic upgrade?

As part of the automatic upgrade WordPress places a file named .maintenance in the blog base folder (folder that contains the wp-admin folder). If that file exists, then vistors will see the message Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.

To stop that message from being displayed to vistors, just delete the .maintenance file. The automatic upgrade should be executed again, just in case it failed.

Update ke WordPress 2.5 Secara Remote

Setelah WordPress 2.5 dirilis dan sempat ragu untuk langsung mengupdatenya, akhirnya tadi malam saya lakukan juga. Untuk mengupdate dengan resiko harus down beberapa saat, memang saya sengaja memilih malam hari, alasan utamanya jelas karena pada saat ini pengunjung yang mengakses sedikit dan jika memang ada apa-apa, saya bisa begadang sampai paginya.

Proses update tadi malam sebenarnya hampir batal saya lakukan, masalahnya beberapa kali mencoba download WordPress gagal terus. Niatnya memang ingin mencoba dulu di webserver lokal, sekadar berjaga-jaga. Namun ternyata muncul ide, bagaimana melakukan update tanpa harus download dan upload.

Setelah melihat sana-sini, sebenarnya ada plugin khusus untuk keperluan upgrade otomatis yaitu WordPress Automatic Upgrade (WPAU), namun sayangnya saya belum menginstall plugin tersebut. Beruntung saya masih menggunakan plugin OneClick for WordPress, maka kemudian saya menginstall WPAU secara remote menggunakan OneClick for WordPress dan mengaktifkannya. Melalui menu Manage, saya mendapati sudah ada anak menu baru Automatic Upgrade, maka kemudian saya klik untuk menjalankan.

Saya teringat bahwa melalui WPAU nantinya ada proses backup data dan database yang nantinya dapat didownload. Krena saya tidak menginginkan adanya proses download, maka saya masuk ke Cpanel. Saya buat direktori untuk menampung salinan file-file sebelumnya, dan untuk database saya lakukan backup dengan membuat salinan. baru kemudian saya lanjutkan proses upgrade tahap demi tahap (bukan yang automated version). Awalnya pembentukan backup file-file sebelumnya dan kemudian disediakan link untuk mendownload, namun karena saya sudah melakukan, saya abaikan proses ini. Begitu juga untuk backup database, setelah dibentuk, saya tidak mendownloadnya.

Kemudian WPAU mendownload file WordPress terbaru dan mengekstaknya. Selanjutnya, WPAU menginformasikan bahwa blog akan masuk dalam mode “Maintenance” untuk mengantisipasi adanya pengunjung yang kebetulan mengakses daripada menampilkan pesan error tidak jelas. Tahap selanjutnya adalah menonaktifkan semua plugin dan melakukan instalasi file-file WordPress baru. Setelahnya adalah proses upgrade termasuk databasenya.

Setelah itu, yang muncul berikutnya adalah halaman login, dan setelah masuk saya mendapati pertanyaan yang kira-kira “Apakah yakin akan melakukan ini?” tanpa penjelasan untuk apa-apanya. Tadi malam saya jawab Yes saja, begitu sampai tiga kali muncul. Dan ketika kemudian masuk halaman Automatic Upgrade kembali, saya mendapati sudah seperti tampilan awal namun ada tambahan link untuk menghapus file-file sementara yang diperlukan untuk proses upgrade sebelumnya.

Kemudian saya mencoba mengakses maseko.com, dan ternyata memang sudah berjalan, namun masih ada yang kurang. Langsung saja saya masuk ke administrasi plugin, dan memang benar dugaan saya, semua plugin masih dalam kondisi tidak aktif. Saya pikir plugin ini akan melakukan aktivasi plugin yang sebelumnya digunakan, tetapi ternyata tidak. Akhirnya, saya melakukan aktivasi satu per satu. Cek beberapa halaman sepertinya tidak ada masalah. Semoga memang begitu.

Free Magazine Style WordPress Themes And More

Its been a really long time since I did by best WordPress theme series. In the last few months there seems to be a new trend catching up. Designers/bloggers seem to be focusing on Magazine style layouts for blogs. I can easily understand why people are attracted towards a Magazine style layout. A Magazine style layout gives more room to showcase content and advertisement, the normal blog layout has been used too often and has been overused. If you notice I tried a bit to incorporate a magazine style layout on my site but my focus was more on achieving a unique layout and to give more focus to the latest post. But lately I have realized that some of my best/quality posts have been buried among my rants and reviews. I was supposed to finish a redesign on this site on October 1st which also happens to be 6 months since I have been blogging. But if you noticed I have slowed down my blog posts. Hopefully before this years end I should have a spanking new design.

Tutorial Introduction:

Back in 2005, I wrote a little tutorial for WordPress 1.5 on how to integrate wordpress with an existing website. Since then, with the release of WordPress 2.x, working with WordPress has become even easier. This tutorial is an update to my original tutorial and as it appears under a different name, I want to take a moment to clarify who this tutorial is for.

This tutorial is especially for:

1. People interested in learning how to build a WordPress theme from scratch or, more specifically, for those interested in taking an existing design and converting it into a beautifully working WordPress theme.

2. People interested in integrating WordPress with their existing website. As touched on lightly in my first tutorial, the best way to go about integration, in my experience, is to take your existing website and build a WordPress theme out of it, then apply that theme to your WordPress blog and voila, if all has gone well you have a perfect integration. It can require some handiness with CSS, but the principles covered in this tutorial will get you well on your way.

Extra Note on WordPress Integration:

As questions on integration are the ones I receive most often, I’ll take a few more moments to make sure your options are clear. In my experience, there are two ways to integrate WordPress with an existing website:

• One, you can install WordPress, write your posts, and then use PHP or Javascript to integrate the feed directly into your existing design. The drawback with this is if you want to include any links in the feed (for example, to read the rest of the post or add comments). If they click a link, it has to take them somewhere and by default they’ll go to your installation of WordPress which will most likely look nothing like your existing website.
• Two, you can take your existing design, tables or CSS, and create a WordPress theme that matches your site exactly. Then, apply it to your WordPress installation and you can now have a “/blog” (or whatever you decide to use WordPress for) that looks and feels exactly like your website. Thus, while it doesn’t actually sound like an integration, the result for your end users is the same: you’ve added the functionality of WordPress without sacrificing your design and now offer your users added functionality with total continuity.
