Wikipedia

The term graphic design can refer to a number of artistic and professional disciplines which focus on visual communication and presentation. Various methods are used to create and combine symbols, images and/or words to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce the final result. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated.

Common uses of graphic design include magazines, advertisements, product packaging and web design. For example, a product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as shapes and color which unify the piece. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements.

The process of communicating visually using text and images to present information. Typography and page layout are vital basis of Graphic Design. The latter was mainly used for printed media (books, magazines, etc.) but now it is also used for interactive purposes through Interactive Design.

Modern History :::

Modern design of the early 20th century was a reaction against the corruption of typography and design of the late 19th century. The trademark of early modern typography is the sans-serif typeface. Early Modern typographers such as Edward Johnston and Eric Gill were inspired by industrial typography of the nineteenth century.

In the eary 1900s, Soviet Constructivism applied ‘intellectual production’. Their movement focused on: seeing personal art as useless in revolutionary Russia and thus creating functional objects instead. As a result, they designed buildings, posters, clothing, furniture, logos, menus….

In 1928, Jan Tschichold set the principles of modern typography in his influential book, New Typography.

Tschichold and typographers such as Herbert Bayer and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and El Lissitzky are the pioneers of modern graphic design. Although the computer has changed production forever, their experimental approach to design helped them create stylistic production techniques that influnced the 20th century designers.

In the following years, Graphic Design in the modern style was widespread. After the WWII, the American economy needed Draphic Design greatly for advertising.

In 1937, the German Bauhaus school of design moved to Chicago; this set the great evolution of modern architecture and design.

Important designers of the mid-century modern design:
-Adrian Frutiger: Designer of the typefaces Univers and Frutiger
-Paul Rand: Applied the principles of the Bauhaus to logo design, advertising and corporate identity.
-Joseph Muller-Brockmann: Poster designer.
-Hermann Zapf : Important designer of postmodern typography. He designed the Palatino and Optima typefaces.

Graphic Design grew even more with the publishing of the ‘First things first 1964 Manifesto’ which criticized the ideas of value-free and commercial design. This influenced new graphic designers and lead to the founding of new publications.

In 1973, Milton Glaser designed the I Love NY ad and a famous Bob Dylan poster.

David Carson has not restricted himself to the rules of modern designs. Some of his designs for a magazine cannot be read; they include typography designed to be only visual.

Stages involved in producing a work of graphic design:
————————————

1.defining the creative brief
2.research
3.visualizing ideas
4.laying out the design
5.finalizing artwork
6.evaluating printed work
