Mizar , dosen teknik presentasi. Seharusnya pertanyaan ini mudah dijawab oleh kami, namun dari sekian jawab pertanyaan, beliau masih menganggap salah.

Definisi Desain Grafis: adalah salah satu bentuk seni lukis (gambar) terapan yang memberikan kebebasan kepada sang desainer (perancang) untuk memilih, menciptakan, atau mengatur elemen rupa seperti ilustrasi, foto, tulisan, dan garis di atas suatu permukaan dengan tujuan untuk diproduksi dan dikomunikasikan sebagai sebuah pesan. Gambar maupun tanda yang digunakan bisa berupa tipografi atau media lainnya seperti gambar atau fotografi.Desain grafis umumnya diterapkan dalam dunia periklanan, packaging, perfilman, dan lain-lain.

The process of communicating visually using text and images to present information. Typography and page layout are vital basis of Graphic Design. The latter was mainly used for printed media (books, magazines, etc.) but now it is also used for interactive purposes through Interactive Design.

Modern History :::

Modern design of the early 20th century was a reaction against the corruption of typography and design of the late 19th century. The trademark of early modern typography is the sans-serif typeface. Early Modern typographers such as Edward Johnston and Eric Gill were inspired by industrial typography of the nineteenth century.

In the eary 1900s, Soviet Constructivism applied ‘intellectual production’. Their movement focused on: seeing personal art as useless in revolutionary Russia and thus creating functional objects instead. As a result, they designed buildings, posters, clothing, furniture, logos, menus….

In 1928, Jan Tschichold set the principles of modern typography in his influential book, New Typography.

Tschichold and typographers such as Herbert Bayer and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and El Lissitzky are the pioneers of modern graphic design. Although the computer has changed production forever, their experimental approach to design helped them create stylistic production techniques that influnced the 20th century designers.

In the following years, Graphic Design in the modern style was widespread. After the WWII, the American economy needed Draphic Design greatly for advertising.

In 1937, the German Bauhaus school of design moved to Chicago; this set the great evolution of modern architecture and design.

Important designers of the mid-century modern design:
-Adrian Frutiger: Designer of the typefaces Univers and Frutiger
-Paul Rand: Applied the principles of the Bauhaus to logo design, advertising and corporate identity.
-Joseph Muller-Brockmann: Poster designer.
-Hermann Zapf : Important designer of postmodern typography. He designed the Palatino and Optima typefaces.

Graphic Design grew even more with the publishing of the ‘First things first 1964 Manifesto’ which criticized the ideas of value-free and commercial design. This influenced new graphic designers and lead to the founding of new publications.

In 1973, Milton Glaser designed the I Love NY ad and a famous Bob Dylan poster.

David Carson has not restricted himself to the rules of modern designs. Some of his designs for a magazine cannot be read; they include typography designed to be only visual.

Sesuai dengan hakekat desain yang berarti kegiatan pemecahan masalah, maka diharapkan mereka mampu memecahkan masalah bagaimana merancang fisik dan visual suatu barang cetak agar komunikatif, efisien, artistik, dan printable atau tidak menemui masalah ketika rancangannya dieksekusi di industri percetakan. Jadi memang diharapkan agar mahasiswa jurusan ini mampu menerjemahkan desainnya agar langsung dapat dilaksanakan/diteruskan ke perusahaan-perusahaan percetakan atau persiapan-nya tanpa kendala yang berarti.

Pengertian desain grafis menurut beberapa tokoh:

  • Menurut Suyanto desain grafis didefinisikan sebagai “Aplikasi dari ketrampilan seni dan komunikasi untuk kebutuhan bisnis dan industri”. Aplikasi-aplikasi ini dapat meliputi periklanan dan penjualan produk, menciptakan identitas visual untuk institusi, produk dan perusahaan, dan lingkungan grafis, desain informasi, dan secara visual menyempurnakan pesan dalam publikasi.
  • Menurut Jessica Helfand dalam situs http://www.aiga.com/ mendefisikan desain grafis sebagai kombinasi komplek kata-kata dan gambar, angka-angka dan grafik, foto-foto dan ilustrasi yang membutuhkan pemikiran khusus dari seseorang individu yang bisa menggabungkan elemen-elemen ini, sehingga mereka dapat menghasilkan sesuatu yang khusus, sangat berguna, mengejutkan atau subservis atau sesuatu yang mudah diingat.
  • Menurut Danton Sihombing desain grafis memperkerjakan berbagai elemen seperti marka, simbol, uraian verbal yang divisualisaikan lewat tipografi dan gambar baik dengan teknik fotografi ataupun ilustrasi. Elemen-elemen tersebut diterapkan dalam dua fungsi, sebagai perangkat visual dan perangkat komunikasi.
  • Menurut Warren dalam Suyanto memanai desain grafis sebagai suatu terjemahan dari ide dan tempat ke dalam beberapan jenis urutan yang struktural dan visual.
  • Sedangkan Blanchard mendefisikan desain grafis sebagai suatu seni komunikatif yang berhubungan dengan industri, seni dan proses dalam menghasilkan gambaran visual pada segala permukaan.
