Macromedia Flash MX 2004

This is the new improved version of the Flash Dock wrapped in an ActionScript 2.0 class. We included and example that is easy to modify. Below is the code used to create this dock. The rest is in the Dock.as ActionScript class.

Apple has convinced millions that they can make the switch from Windows to OS X, but those curious about Linux have to see for themselves if they can work or play on a free desktop. The short answer is that, for most halfway tech-savvy people who aren’t hardcore gamers, yes, you can. There are positively addictive productivity apps available for Linux, along with tools to make switching between Linux and other systems easy, or just running Windows programs themselves if you need to. Today we’re detailing a Linux desktop that helps you move quickly, work with Windows, and just get things done; read on for a few suggestions on setting it up.
Setting up your system
If you’re dual-booting with Windows, there’s no reason to build a wall between the two systems. Most modern Linux distributions can read and write to hard drive spaces created for Windows, free Windows apps can grab files from Linux, and many free programs can even share configuration settings. See our guide to using a single data store when dual-booting.
Even if you’re devoting your whole hard drive to Linux, you don’t have to leave Windows behind. Free virtualization software VirtualBox is a fairly user-friendly solution to running Windows inside Linux. I’ve found that it works great with most flavors of XP, but, as you might imagine, has a few problems with the “home” versions of Vista, and requires a swift system to not occasionally lag a bit. One nice compromise to needing just that one must-have Windows app for work is running it seamlessly in Linux. On my own system, VirtualBox is the solution for Office 2007 apps and, when I need it, iTunes (without USB/iPod functionality, unfortunately). Read the rest of this entry »

Windows only: MobaLiveCD, a free, stand-alone emulation tool, lets you run Linux live CDs from a window inside Windows, without any hard drive installation whatsoever. Based on the open-source QEMU emulator, MobaLiveCD can set up a live CD with a bit of hard drive space for persistent changes on your system, or you can run the 1.6MB app off a thumb drive or desktop and simply point it at an ISO image (or install its right-click function for all ISOs). My test with Ubuntu 8.04.1 wasn’t exactly speedy, and I had to run the app as an Administrator to get it working in Vista, but it otherwise delivers on the promise of no-install Linux inside Windows. MobaLiveCD is a free download for Windows systems only.

It is possible to install Mac OS X on your Windows PC. A small software package called PearPC emulates the Mac hardware on your PC. You can even install many Mac programs.

One way to store or group files on a Mac is to create a Disk Image. A Disk Image is a file which has the properties of a separate hard drive or CD. It has a size limit and options for encryption to keep your files safe and secure. This how-to will work with Mac OS X.
Steps
- Create a New Folder and place the files you would like in your disk image into this new folder.
- Right click (or CTRL-Click) the folder and select “Get Info” and note the size of its contents.
- Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)
- Click the “New Image” icon to create a new disk image. Enter a name for the Image, and select a size adequate for the size of your folder you created in Step 2. Set the encryption to “none” and Format to “read/write disk image.” or “DVD/CD Master.” See Tips to learn how to encrypt the image.
- Place the contents of the folder from Step 2 into the newly mounted disk image.
- Unmount the Disk Image by dragging its icon to the Trash. In the Finder window, you can also click the Eject symbol next to the mounted image.
- Be proud that you now know how to do something most people don’t know how to do!
